Canada West wins gold medal at the World Junior A Challenge

For the third time in the tournament’s six-year history,Canada West has won the gold medal at the World Junior A Challenge. In the final they beat Canada East 4-2.

 
 
 
 
LANGLEY, B.C. – Canada West with a selection of U20 players from BCHL, AJHL and SJHL won the 2011 World Junior A Challenge after beating Canada East 4-2 in the gold medal game. The Canada East team consisted of U20 players from OJHL and CCHL.

Canada West got a tough start of the tournament losing both games in the Group stage. First 0-2 to Sweden and then 6-1 to USA.

In the quarter final Curtis Loik scored twice and the team got its first win - 4-1.

Alex Kerfoot scored in overtime of the semi final against Sweden to win the game 2-1 and advance to the final.

In the final Evan Richardson, Alex Kerfoot, Carson Cooper and Aaron Hardley scored for the winners from the west while Michael Neville and Daniel Milne scored for Canada East.

USA played also with an U20 team with players mainly from USHL. The Americans captured the third place after beating Sweden 4-0 in the bronze medal game.

Russia beat Czech Republic 3-2 in the game for the 5th place.

Sweden and Russia played with their U18 teams. the Czechs had 4 players born 1993 but besides them they also had only U18 players.
