Olli Määttä picked first in the 2011 CHL Import Draft

Olli Määttä picked first in the 2011 CHL Import Draft

29 Jun 2011 | Henrik Lundqvist

Each team in the CHL (OHL, WHL and QMJHL) is permitted to carry two European Import players each season. These players are selected annually at the Import Draft. In todays 2011 draft Finnish defenseman Olli Määttä was selected as #1 by London Knights (OHL).

The order of selection is rotated through each of the three leagues in the CHL using an inverse order of their final regular season standings from the 2010-11 season. The Barrie Colts originally held the number one selection but traded it to the London Knights of the Ontario Hockey League.

The Knights used their pick on Finnish defender Olli Mättää, who last season played for JYP in the Finnish junior league and for D Team in the Finnish second league Mestis. He also participated in both the World U20 and World U18 Championships last season.
