The Icelandic League has a new champion: the youngest club captures title after a season dominated

League top scorer Björn Róbert Sigurdarson and Swedish goalie Erik Strandberg were the heros of the first ever title for Esja UMFK Reykjavík: the forward scored the decisive shoot-out in game three of finals series against current champion Skautafélag Akureyrar (SA), owner of last four titles, while the goalie stopped the last penalty by SA player-coach Jussi Sipponen. Just three years after the foundation, Esja can celebrate the title: "This is great, compared to what we are a young club. The result is striking, I think, we have a large group of good guys who are all very good friends" said  Bjorn Robert Sigurdson.

After dominating the regular season, with only two defeats in 24 games, Esja needs just three games to sweep out SA, winning 4-3 at overtime and 3-2  the first duels, before the shoot-outs decisive victory

"This is just insane, it's really the only word" said to mbl.is forward Egil Thormódsson, brother of champions coach Gauti, who will leave the team to study coaching in Canada. "We've been waiting so long for this. SA monopolize the title since 2012" - continues Egil - "You can feel quite the pressure, especially as there were just eight minutes left. But it just needs to do what needs to be done and step up"

The 2016-2017 finals will be long remembered because were spectacular- said forward Andri Sverrisson - "But also our season will be.We have played eleven times with SA and won it ten times. We played 27 games this season and we got 25 wins"
