The defending champions were sharp in the Junior World Championship opener, but couldn't hold off team USA, who managed to get the points in the shootout.

Chase De Leo scored in the shootout, lifting team USA over the defending champions Finland in their opening games at the World Junior Championship.

Jack Eichel found his way to the net as well. Artturi Lehkonen was the only Finn to score.

First period goals from Rantanen and Tuch stood to the very end forcing the game into overtime.

The Finnish scored on their first opportunity as early as 1:22 into the game when Rantanen buried the first goal from the back of the net off the skate of center Austen Matthews.

Tuch tied the game at 13:54 after a nifty play from Eicher, USA's most promising and most dangerous player. He played the puck off the boards to himself before sending the perfect feed for Tuch in the middle.

The US outshot Finland 38-29 who decided to give Ville Husso a chance between the pipes instead of Jusse Saros, last year's hero and gold-medal winner.

Third period was marred by penalties, the teams collected 16 minutes of penalties combined. Saros was sharp in net even when the Americans controlled the puck for long periods.
