Eurohockey NHL mock draft

Eurohockey NHL mock draft

26 Jun 2014 | Luis Lopes

Between two great draft years (13, 15). The 2014 NHL draft is announced as 'weaker' and the most difficult to guess in some years.

1. Florida Panthers

Aaron Ekblad (D) - Choose in 2011 has a exceptional player in OHL priority draft, Ekblad already talks and plays like 30 year old hockey player. He's the most ready NHL player in the 14 class. Great "two-way" player, he's the perfect feat for the Panthers.

2. Buffalo Sabres

Sam Reinhart (C, RW) - The second pick is a very tough one, can go to Reinhart or Bennet. With Reinhart, Buffalo get's the higher hockey IQ in this draft. He's the type of player that can make the others better. Has the ability to set the pace in the game. Quick release and vision he's a great asset for Sabres rebuilding.

3. Edmonton Oilers

Leon Draisaitl (C, LW) -  Leon is the dream of all NHL GM's. A big center with great playmaking skills and higher hockey IQ. After the WJC he seemed to drop in the rankings but he managed to pull himself together and make a great final run. A sign of a great player right there.

4. Calgary Flames

Sam Bennet (C,LW) - Is the name Doug Gilmour familiar to you? He got the number 93 from him but it didn't stop here. Don't let this kid full you about his size( 183cm 82kg). He plays a 'in your face' game and don't have fear what so ever to play physical against bigger player. Other then that he's able to create chances with quickness and constant effort. Great skills also.

5. New York Islanders

Michael Dal Colle (C, LW)  - He's the "fifth Beatle" of the 14' draft. A force of nature with a great hockey sense. Very dynamic, he possesses an excellent vision and NHL shot already. All the tools to be a great complement to John Tavares.

6. Vancouver Canucks

William Nylander (C, LW) - It's here that the things get complicated in this draft. The first five players have a conses from all NHL scouts. After that everything can happen, it will depend what teams see or like in these kids. Son of former NHL player Michael Nylander, William has all the tools to be a NHL star. The first part part of season didn't help this kid into NHL draft with all those changes in SHL/Allsvenskan, but once he founded the right spot at Södertälje team, the kid was nothing more but spectacular for his age. The WJC18 in April finish all doubts about how good he can be. Some scouts say that he's a selfish player and that could/should release the puck earlier. But at 18 that's not really a big deal, he has more then time to correct that.

7. Carolina Hurricanes

Hayden Fleury (D) - A diamond waiting to be polish. Fleury he's already a big, physical blueliner with a big shot. Moves the puck well, understands the game and doesn't have afraid to make hard hits.  He does everything good but nothing great. That will come with experience and and practice.

8. Toronto Maple Leafs

Nick Ritchie (RW, LW) - A kid in a men's body (190cm 107kg). Size, speed and skill. Goal scorer and hard hitter. Ritchie is the kind of player that the new Leafs GM Brendan Shanahan love to have with him, because he reminds... well... him!

9. Winnipeg Jets

Nikolaj Ehlers (LW) - Don't let this kid full you with his size(182cm 80kg). With his great hockey sense he knows how to take a hard hit without get injured. Take the Canadian press by storm with his quick skating and skills. Ehlers can easily beat the quickest opponent the foot speed. Other then that he certainly knows how to score goals. He was the best goal scorer in this 14' draft.

10. Anaheim Ducks(via Ottawa Senators)

Jake Virtanen (LW, RW) - With Nikolaj Ehlers, Virtanen is the fastest skater in this class draft. Doesn't have afraid to play dirty on the corners. He's a pure goal scorer and releases the puck very quick. Anaheim doesn't need him right now, so he will have plenty of time to adjust his game to the NHL level.

11. Nashville Predators

Kevin Fiala (LW, RW) - Nashville needs offense and Fiala has the potential to be a game-breaking in NHL level. Like Ehlers and Nylander he has a remarkable acceleration that can put in trouble the opponent. Great puck control, and soft hands. He's not big but can handle opponents well with his quickness and hockey sense. Doesn't have afraid to play in traffic.

12. Arizona Coyotes

Kasperi Kapanen (RW) - Son of former NHL player Sami Kapanen, Kasperi has all the tools to be a good point scorer in NHL. Excellent playmaking and skills is what Kasperi brings to ice. Reeds and understands well the game. Kasperi is also capable to score goals for the team.

13. Washington Capitals

Julius Honka (D) - Julius Honka has some Erik Karlsson on him. When Honka has the puck he quickly transforms himself in the fourth forward of the team. Moves the puck well and doesn't have afraid to try things. Honka his very quick to catch to opponent when does the transition offense-defense.

14. Dallas Stars

Brendan Perlini (LW) - At this point of the draft Perlini is the best player available. Perlini has the size, the skills and the speed to do great in NHL. He has a quick release and doesn't bother to work in front of the net either.

15. Detroit Red Wings

Dylan Larkin (C, LW) - The Red Wings need a center and Larkin can be the the right person for the job.  Good playmaking and hockey sense and works well in both sides of ice. Great work ethic. That's the kind of player that feats well on Ken's Holland organization.

16. Columbus Blue Jackets

Robbie Fabbri (C) - The only reason he's not on top-5 right now it's because of NHL GM standards 'faster and stronger'. At 16 in the ranking, the Blue Jackets can do a 'steal' on this year draft. With the puck on his hands everything you ask he's got it. Speed, skill, goal scorer, two-way sense, work ethic... you name it he's got it.

17. Philadelphia Flyers

Travis Sanheim (D) - Smart player with good offensive offensive skills. In the first part of season had some trouble to adjust his game to WHL, but when he found it his game out easy. Needs to learn how to work on ice with his physic but that will come with experience.

18. Minnesota Wild

Sonny Milano (LW, C) - The Wild organization will be more than happy to chose the future Boston College student. A winger with great skills and skating. He likes to carry the puck and he's fast on his feet. Considered a playmaker also can produce some goals himself.

19. Tampa Bay Lightning

Roland Mckeown (D) - Mckeown could be in the future a very good NHL defensemen. Reeds the game well and never panic under stress. Like Julius Honka he moves the puck well and he has a good shot. Tampa Bay could be a great feat for Mckeown.

20. San Jose Sharks

David Pastrnak (RW) - A flashy, speedy winger with gifted hands. He uses his quickness to create himself chances for him and for the teammates. Very dangerous player on 1-on-1 situation.

21. St. Louis Blues

Jared McCann (C) - McCann is a smart two-way forward with great work ethic. The Blues would be thrilled to have McCann at 21th position. NHL scouts say that he can be a mix from Jeff Carter and Darren Helm.

22. Pittsburgh Penguins

Alex Tuch (RW) - Another future Boston college student in this draft. Already a NHL sized player will have time to be stronger up mentally. Coachable, he's type of player that will help you in the future and you can't go wrong with him.

23. Colorado Avalanche

Ivan Barbashev (LW) - Barbashev is skilled winger with good vision and great pass ability. Coach Patrick Roy will not be afraid to pick the kid. There a reason why he has come play to CHL... to play in NHL.

24. Anaheim Ducks

Conner Bleakley (C) - Conner Bleakley is natural born leader. He has the size, the speed and skills to make into the NHL level. Like Virtanen, Anaheim don't need him right now, so he has the on his side to become a good NHL player.

25. Boston Bruins

Jakub Vrana (LW, RW) - Jakub is a dynamic goal scorer that could feat perfectly in Bruins organization. He's a speedy player with one heavy shot. Doesn't have afraid to work around the net and on traffic. He will need a couple of years to adjust at NHL game and the SHL is the right place.

26. Montreal Canadiens

Adrian Kempe (C) - You can never go wrong with a Swedish prospect in the first round and GM Marc Bergevin knows that. Kempe is tough, physical and knows how finish the checks with success without being dangerous for the opponent, a quality that every coach likes to have on his team.

27. Chicago Blackhawks

Marcus Pettersson (D) - Skelleftea knows how to produce defensive players and Petersson is the next one. Pettersson knows how to positioning himself on the ice and rarely caught himself out of tempo. Still a project but Chicago can be rewarded in the future.

28. Tampa Bay (via New York Rangers)

Nikita Scherbak (LW) - GM Steve Yzerman doesn't have afraid to pick russian prospects. Kucherov, Namestnikov and Vasilevsky are the prove. Scherbak is skilled but also very gritty. Very creative player he managed himself to a great season in struggling team. Needs to work the defensive game but that will come with experience.

29. Los Angeles Kings

Nick Schmaltz (C) - Is almost a crime having this kid at 29th and get picked by the Stanley Cup Champions. But has said before this year draft is a tough one. The future Univ. North Dakota student possesses a good vision and quickness to release the puck. He's defensibly responsable making him a great package for a 29th position.

30. New Jersey Devils

Joshua Ho-Sang (C,RW) - The pick that Betmann invented goes to the Devils after the Kovalchuk depart. Devils need a victory here. They really need. They must gamble. There's no bigger joker in this draft then the most controversial player in the classroom (70% of the teams have in "not to pick list") .  Joshua Ho-Sang. Three years ago if asked any scout for the first pick on 14' draft the response would be loud and clear: Joshua Ho-Sang. He's the Mario Ballotelli of the draft. It's up the teams to think if he worth trouble or not. If they can manage him or not. He can be has good has Patrick Kane. He must want it bad. The arsenal of skills is out of chart.
