The last act of Finnish captain is a masterpiece to give his country a deserved bronze medal

"Twenty-six years ago I played my first national team game, and it's been a great journey so far, and this is a great ending." a proud and touched Teemu Selanne celebrates in the locker room his last appearance at Olympics and his fourth medal. "I'd rather win bronze than lose for the silver. It's the best feeling so far of my career with the national team." said Selanne, after a fantastic game played by Finland to rout USA and capture again a medal at the Olympics. "Unbelievable. I'm so happy that the game was pretty much over in the third, so I could enjoy every second. I'm so proud of this team." said Selanne

The last game for Finland and USA in Sochi, is not the game teams wanted, but the chance not to going away from Olympics empty-hands. After the flu, Tuukka Rask is back in Finnish cage, while Jonathan Quick again is the guardian of US goal. Finland has a better start and seems more motivated; captain Teemu Selanne, at his last Olympics, has an early chance to open the score but doesn’t takes advantage of a misunderstanding between Quick and a defender. US retorts on power play, the nice turn of Van Riemsdyk finds Rask ready to block and same Van Riemsdyk shoot on goal twice, always finding Rask on his way. At 08 Finland has a capital chance but Kesler saves twice rebounding with theskate and then the chest a shot of Jussi Jokinen with Quick out of action after an incredible save on Kontiola. An high sticking called to Pacioretty gives Finland chances with Timonen and Hietanen, blocked by Quick. At 16 US earns a penalty shot in a strange way: Timonen shoots a broken stick left on the ice hitting the puck controlled by Kane; penalty for USA after a long discussion but Rask has the last word deflecting the Patrick Kane try. "The first one kind of rolled on me, I thought I had him". said Kane after the game describing the shot

Tuukka Rask deflects first penalty shot by Patrick Kane

The last part of period has US mark with a constant presence in Finnish defence zone and a big chance for Pacioretty in a one-to-one against Raask concluded out. Survived to a penalty at the begin of second period, Finland delivers a terrible punch to USA scoring two goals in 11 seconds for the delight of the fans: at 21:27 Teemu Selanne finds the way to beat Quick with a back hand shot and Jussi Jokinen at 21:38 finalizes a pass by Lehtera getting in a bad positioned US defence.

USA has another penalty shot conceded at 26:24 when Komarov slashes Kane but same Patrick Kane again misses it hitting the bar in a crowd of boos. Finland has good opportunities on power play but quick deflects on Selanne and Salo and a excellent one with Grandlund missing the deflection on Selanne pass. In the last seconds of period referee calls the video review to check a shot passing caressing Rask cage. With the first power play in the last period, at 46:10, Finland closes the question with a missile of Juuso Heitanen passing in the traffic in front of Quick with Komarov jumping to let the puck gets in. Second power play and fourth goal, scored by the acclaimed Teemu Selanne deflecting in front of Quick a Granlund pass. Game becomes a Finnish monologue: Olli Maatta scored fifth goal at 53:09 again on power play finishing a team move with American defenders just watching. Kane naively hits Vaatanen giving Finland another power play, the first past unharmed by Americans: the last emotions of the game are a personal move by Komarov blocked by Quick and a shot from the blue by Orpik deflected by Raask. Finland won a deserved bronze to close as best it could Teemu Selanne Olympic career.

Game is over! Finland wins Bronze medal

In the mixed zone, while finnish players celebrate, US Captain Zach Parise is very disappointed:"I don't know what went wrong:, I think it started yesterday. We didn't show up to play a tough team in Canada. We lost that game. And today, I thought we had a pretty good start, but once we got down, they got that first goal, we kind of deflated. They played like they had something to win, and we just kind of shut it down. Our effort was not good enough to beat those guys. Our last two games we were just flat, we had nothing. It's kind of embarrassing, the last two games we played. We had no jam in our play and no speed in our skates.''

"We dominated the first two periods today and found ourselves down 2-0." said Patrick Kane, exercising self-criticism about his personal performance in Sochi: "No excuses, wasn't good enough, wasn't good enough to help the team win a medal. I was expected to do a lot more."

Goalie Tukka Rask had another great performance, including stopping two penalties by Kane: "We played against Chicago a couple of months ago, and he scored on me on a penalty shot and I just wanted to get that back. I'm not sure if I got a piece of that first one, the second one he hit the post. He's a great player. Fortunately for me he didn't score today." "I'm feeling happy - said Rask about the victory - "It was a great game again from us. We got the lead, and pretty much dominated, especially in the third period. It's a great feeling. We played pretty tight as a team again. We protected the net, and didn't give them second chances, which is really great from a goalie's perspective. It's a team win again."

Another veteran, Kimmo Timonen, won, along with Selanne, his fourth medal: "You could tell today we wanted to win for the country, for our team, and there's a couple guys who probably won't play any more here. It's special. We're really proud as a country. We're not that big of a country but we produce pretty good hockey players. Not necessarily the top names in NHL or European leagues but once we get into a group we play as a team and it showed again today."

Jori Lehtera want to honour his captain: When he comes into the locker room he is such a good player and such a good character, everybody is watching him. Always when you see him, you start smiling. We felt really bad after the game vs Sweden but after the meeting in the locker room with Teemu, everybody knew we had to win this medal for the team, for Finland and for him."
