Do you know:

  1. Sweden beat the Czech Republic 4-2 in its first preliminary round game, with defenceman Erik Karlsson scoring twice.
  2. Switzerland narrowly edged out Latvia 1-0 in its first Group C game. Simon Moser scored the game's only goal, while goaltender Jonas Hiller earned the first shutout of the men's ice hockey tournament.
  3. The two teams last met in the quarterfinals at Torino 2006, with the Swedes knocking out the Swiss 6-2.
  4. They also met in the gold medal match at last year’s world championship with Swedes winning 5-1.
  5. Defenceman Alexander Edler will not dress for the Swedes as he is still banned for a hit on Canada’s Eric Staal at last year’s IIHF world championship. Sweden also lost forward Henrik Zetterberg, injured after first game
  6. Switzerland's 25-man roster contains eight NHL players. One other player plays at a lower level in the United States, with the remaining 16 are attached to a club from the Swiss domestic league (NLA)
  7. Three players on the Swiss roster are contesting their fourth Olympic Winter Games: defencemen Mark Streit and Mathias Seger and forward Martin Pluss. They will establish a record, as no Swiss ice hockey player has featured in more than three Games.
  8. If Sweden wins a gold medal in Sochi, it will become only the third NOC to win this title at least three times, behind Canada (8) and Soviet Union (7).
  9. Daniel Alfredsson, 41, became the oldest player to participate in Olympic men's ice hockey for Sweden. He supplanted Borje Salming, who was 40 when he took part at Albertville 1992.

Quote of the game:

Sean Simpson (Switzerland coach) "Just because we're ranked seventh or eighth in the world and we've won one medal, it doesn't mean that we will be competing here for a medal."
