Petri Kontiola put on a show during the past two months that earned him the title Player Of The Month. With his performances in both the KHL and the World Championships, he deserved it most.

Petri KontiolaWith April 7th, when KHL Finals began, Traktor Chelyabinsk center started his quest to become the Player of the month combined for April and May. He also participated in the World Championships with his team Finland and there also went on to be the top scorer of the tournament.

During the KHL playoffs, Kontiola recorded a total of 19 points, scoring 10 goals and adding 9 assists. In the Finals he scored only a goal, and that came in game 6, when Traktor lost in overtime 2-3. Kontiola tied the game at 2 ten minutes prior to the end of the game and brought it to overtime. Gennady Razin and Andrei Kostitsyn set the whole thing up at 49:58.

Although he was shining with goals and assists during the Finals, it still can't erase the fact he was Traktor's top scorer in the playoffs. He was his team's important link in quest for the Gagarin Cup, but in the end couldn't help them win.

And then, in May started the World Championships in Sweden and Finland. Petri Kontiola played a big role for team Finland, but though couldn't help them reach the end and proclaim themselves world champions. They were stopped in the semifinals by later champions, Sweden. It seemed they were a bit shocked as they went on to lose the bronze medal game to team USA in shootout.

Kontiola finished the tournament as top scorer again. With 10 games played he scored 8 goals and recorded as many assists for a total of 16 points. He was +6 overall in the tournament and spent 8 minutes in the penalty box. In the end he was voted in WC All-star team and chosen as the best forward of the tournament.
