On the third day of the 2012 Ivan Hlinka Memorial tournament for Under-18 national teams Finland beat USA and Czech Republic beat Russia. That means that both USA and Russia will miss the medal round. From the other group Canada and Sweden qualified for the semi finals.
Sweden-Switzerland 8-4The winner of the game would qualify for the semi final and it was Switzerland who took a 2-0 lead in the middle of the first period on goals by Kevin Fiala and Luca Hischier. Swedish coach Rikard Grönborg managed to make his team more successful in the second period in which the Swedes scored four unanswered goals. Tobias Liljendahl and Anton Cederholm scored unassisted goals. Tobias Liljendahl scored 3-2 at 25:16 and Robert Hägg made it 4-2 at 37:30. A goal by Jacob de la Rose at 4:44 of period three for 5-2 turned out to be the game-winner but the Swiss team hadn’t given up. Kevin Fiala (born 1996) scored his second of the game to make it 5-3 half ways through the last period. Alexander Henriksson scored for Sweden and Ramon Pfranger for Swizerland. The Swiss hope died when Adam Brodecki scored 7-4 and Lucas Wallmark 8-4.
Slovakia-Canada 2-3Slovakia was really close to a big upset against Canada. With four minutes remaining Slovakia had a 2-0 lead after Kristian Horvat had scored in the first period and Martin Ambroz in the second. The Canadian team however managed to turn the score to a 3-2 win to finish the group stage with a perfect record. Ryan Kujawinski scored 2-1 at 56:15, Josh Morrissey tied the game at 57:07 and two minutes later Sam Reinhart cored the winner for Canada.
"Despite the result, today the boys brought their best performance in the tournament. Two thirds we were - dare I say - the better team", says Slovak coach Anton Bartanus.
Finland-USA 8-6Finland qualifies for the semi final thanks to tonight’s 8-6 against USA. For the Americans the 2012 Ivan Hlinka Memorial is a big failure. They lost all games and will have to play Slovakia for the 7th place. The game saw 14 goals. Finland scored the first at 16:41 when Felix Westermarck scored his first of three goals. Adam Erne tied it and Kaspeti Ojantakanen made it 2-1 finland before the first period was over. In the second period 7 goals were scored between 22:03 and 34:55 and when the third period started the score was 5-5. Aleksi Mustonen scored his second of the day at 46:47 and a minute later Felix Westermarck gave the Finns a two-goal lead. Vinni Lettieri brought the Americans closer at 53:14 but Eetu Koivistoinen scored an empty netter for 8-6 1:36 before the end.
"We put in a great effort but fell short," said Matt Herr, head coach of USA to USAHockey.com. "We started to find a rhythm and play well, but it's hard to have a game plan for a game like that. We play against Slovakia on Friday, so we'll try to find that groove again to be successful."
Czech Republic-Russia 3-2The home team Czech Republic knocked out Russia from the medal round with tonight’s 3-2 win. Ondrej Kase scored an early goal for the Czech’s but Russia replied with goals by Vladislav Lysenko and Sergei Tolchinski before the first intermission. Czech Republic won the second period 2-0 with goals by David Kämpf and Petr Ceslik to turn the score to a 3-2 lead. The Russians chased the equalizer in the third period but got three minor penalties against and no power-play and the Czech’s could celebrate the win.
